Anonymous Q&A for events: how to set up, moderate and run audience questions

· 5 min read

To run an anonymous Q&A at an event, create a Q&A session in QuizX, project the session screen and let the audience send questions from their phones with the PIN. Questions stay anonymous by default, you can approve each one before it appears, and audience votes push the most popular ones to the top.

Why an anonymous Q&A works better than raised hands

At most events, the same few people ask questions while everyone else stays quiet. Some don't want to speak in front of a crowd, and others think their question is too basic.

Letting people type questions on their phones, without their names attached, lowers that barrier. Voting adds a second benefit: the room tells you which questions matter most, so you spend the limited time on those.

Step 1: Create the Q&A session

You have two options, depending on your event:

  • A standalone Q&A: click + Create and choose Q&A session. Good for a panel or a keynote where Q&A is the only interaction.
  • A Q&A block inside a quiz: add a Q&A block to an existing quiz, alongside polls or a word cloud. Everyone stays on the same PIN for the whole session.

Step 2: Choose your settings

Two settings shape how the Q&A behaves:

  • Moderation: questions appear on the screen only after you approve them. Turn this on for public events or any room where you can't predict what people will write.
  • Anonymous: questions appear without the player's name. This is on by default.

In a session that contains only Q&A or a word cloud, people skip the name step entirely. They're labeled automatically as Participant 1, Participant 2 and so on, which makes joining even faster.

Step 3: Launch and let people join

  1. Click Launch, then ▶ Launch session. A PIN is generated automatically.
  2. Click 📺 Session screen and put that window on the projector or stage screen. It shows quizx.ro/play, the PIN and a QR code.
  3. Show the join screen early, during the intro, so people are connected before questions start.
  4. Mention the PIN out loud once or twice. Not everyone looks at the screen at the same moment.

Nobody needs an account or an app. People join in the phone browser, and latecomers can still join while the session runs.

How participants ask and vote

Each participant can send questions of 3 to 300 characters. They can also vote other people's questions up or down. Each person gets one vote per question and can undo it.

The best-voted questions rise to the top. That gives the speaker or host an honest picture of what the room wants to hear about, not only what the loudest person wants.

Moderating questions

If moderation is on, the host panel splits questions into two lists: Awaiting approval and On screen. For each question you have three actions:

  • ✓ Approve sends a question to the session screen.
  • Reject keeps it off the screen.
  • Remove from screen takes down a question that's already showing, for example once it's been answered.

There's no separate "mark as answered" button. Most moderators simply use Remove from screen after a question has been covered, which keeps the list focused on what's still open.

The session screen

The session screen shows the approved questions, ranked by votes, so the speaker can read the next one straight from the projector. When the session ends, the screen shows the top approved questions by score, which makes a neat recap for the room.

The session is saved in your account history, so you can look back at what people asked after the event.

Tips for moderators

  • Split the roles. If you can, have one person moderate on a laptop while the speaker or host reads from the screen.
  • Announce the Q&A early. Tell people at the start that they can send questions at any time. The best questions often come mid-talk.
  • Approve quickly. A long queue in Awaiting approval makes people think nothing is happening.
  • Merge in your head, not on screen. If several people ask the same thing, approve the clearest version and reject the duplicates.
  • Keep it respectful. Reject anything personal or offensive. Anonymous doesn't mean anything goes.
  • Clear the screen as you go. Use Remove from screen on answered questions so the next one is obvious.

Combine Q&A with polls and a word cloud

Q&A works well next to other formats. You might open with a poll, collect first impressions in a word cloud, then end with Q&A. Use Next block → to move on and End the block to close the current part. For more on polls, read our guide to live polls for presentations.

Frequently asked questions

Are the questions really anonymous?

The Anonymous setting is on by default, so questions appear without the player's name. In Q&A-only sessions, people don't type a name at all and are labeled automatically.

Can I stop inappropriate questions from appearing?

Yes. Turn on Moderation, and questions only appear on the screen after you click Approve. You can also Reject a question or Remove it from the screen.

Is there a way to mark a question as answered?

There's no dedicated button for that. Use Remove from screen once a question has been covered.

Which plan includes Q&A?

Q&A with votes is included from the Pro plan. Check the pricing page for current details.
