How to run a live quiz in class: a step-by-step guide for teachers
To run a live quiz in class, create or pick a quiz, launch a session, and project the session screen so students can join on their phones with the PIN or QR code. You then start the game and move through questions, answers and the leaderboard at your own pace.
What you need before class
- A QuizX account (the free plan works for up to 15 students per session).
- A computer connected to a projector or a big screen.
- Students with a phone, tablet or laptop and a browser. No app and no student accounts are needed.
- A quiz: your own, an imported one, or a template from the quiz library.
If your class is bigger than 15, check the participant limits on the pricing page before the lesson. Starter allows 50 per session and Pro allows 200.
Step 1: Create or pick your quiz
From your dashboard, click + Create and choose New quiz. You'll see How would you like to start? with a few options:
- Blank quiz if you want to write your own questions.
- Quick template to start from a ready-made set.
- Import from Kahoot / Slido if you have an existing file.
- Duplicate a quiz to reuse one you made before.
- Generate with AI to draft questions from a topic, text or PDF (included from Starter, with a daily quota).
In the editor, use + Add question and set the Time limit and Points for each one. Everything saves automatically. For a first lesson, keep it short: eight to twelve questions is plenty.
Step 2: Launch the session
- Click Launch on the quiz card or in the editor.
- Click ▶ Launch session. A game PIN is generated automatically.
- Click 📺 Session screen and drag that window onto the projector. It shows quizx.ro/play, the PIN and a QR code.
Keep your own control panel on your laptop screen. Students see the projector, and you run the game from your side.
Step 3: Let students join
Students open quizx.ro/play in their browser and type the 6-digit PIN, or scan the QR code. Then they type a name (1 to 20 characters). Two players in the same game can't use the same name, so the second one gets asked to pick another.
The lobby on your screen shows everyone who has joined. Late arrivals can still join while the session is running, so you don't have to wait for the last student.
Step 4: Play through the questions
When the class is in, click ▶ Start game. For each question, the flow is the same:
- Students answer on their phones while the timer runs.
- Click ⚡ Show answer to reveal the correct one.
- Click Leaderboard → to show the current ranking.
- Click Next question → to move on.
Points reward both correct answers and speed. After the last question, click Final results → to show the top-3 podium, and open the full leaderboard if you want to see every student.
Set up your first class quiz
The free plan covers a class of up to 15 students, and no card is needed.
Classroom tips that save time
Phones and connections. Ask students to join before you start explaining the lesson, so connection problems surface early. If a phone drops off the Wi-Fi, the student can rejoin and keep their score, as long as they come back within about a minute.
The projector. Put the session screen on the projector and keep the host controls on your own screen. Make the browser window full screen so the PIN and QR code are easy to read from the back row.
Names. Quizzes don't have an anonymous mode and there's no automatic nickname filter, so set a simple rule before students join: first name plus last initial, like "Maya R." That makes the leaderboard readable and helps you match results to students afterward.
If someone joins with an inappropriate name, use Remove player in the lobby and ask them to rejoin with a proper one. Doing this before you click ▶ Start game keeps the leaderboard clean.
Pacing. You decide when to reveal answers and when to move on. Use the pause after ⚡ Show answer to explain the tricky ones. Those quick discussions are often where students learn the most.
When you want grades instead of a game
Turn on Test mode in the editor if the leaderboard would get in the way. Students don't see whether they were right and there's no leaderboard, and you get a grade on a 0–10 or 0–100 scale.
For self-paced work, open the quiz's ⋯ menu and assign it from the Tests & homework panel. Each student works at their own pace, which suits quieter review lessons better than a race.
After the quiz
Sessions are saved in your account history. From the quiz's Stats you can review results per session, and on paid plans you can export them, for example to CSV from Starter.
Frequently asked questions
Do students need an account or an app?
No. They join from any browser at quizx.ro/play with the 6-digit PIN, or by scanning the QR code on the session screen.
Can students play anonymously?
Not in quizzes. Each player types a name, so ask for first name plus last initial and remove any inappropriate names in the lobby.
What happens if a student's phone disconnects?
They can rejoin and keep their score if they come back within about a minute, and the session keeps running for everyone else.
How many students can join on the free plan?
Up to 15 per session. Starter allows 50 and Pro allows 200.
